Back Back To Basics: Magnetic Variation Next

All data for the position of the Sun is calculated to true North. A magnetic compass is commonly used to determine where north is located.

Unfortunately, the position where the compass actually points to - called 'Magnetic North' is NOT True North. True North is located in a different position.

The difference between Magnetic and True North is known as 'Variation', or sometimes, ' Declination'.
